Our Talented Teens
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2012 AT 06:10PM
I can honestly say that I am impressed and amazed daily by the talent and innovation my role in working with teens has allowed me to witness. There is nothing more energizing than watching a teen engaging in an activity in which he/she not only demonstrates talent but loves. Whether it is baton throwing or baseball, dance, art, fencing, or flame throwing (okay, well, maybe not flame throwing, that would cause me too much anxiety to enjoy), the unbridled devotion and diligence a teen displays toward a talent or interest can be not only inspiring but refreshing.

Moms and Guilt
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2012 AT 08:12PM
Yes, we all feel it. Some of us feel it on a daily basis. Others feel it less frequently. Once you have a child you become very familiar with this heart sinking, breath stopping, and sometimes punishing feeling of guilt. You feel responsible for the health, safety, and happiness of your child and if you do anything that falls short of being the best possible mother you can be you migh feel…..drumroll here…GUILT.

When the Stars Fall Out of the Sky
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 16, 2012 AT 05:23AM
Whitney, Demi, Lindsay, Heather examples of how lost love can end with tragedy and/or how drugs can destroy? I recently talked with a group of teens about some celebs that have recently fallen from grace. I think the most surprising thing was that many of these kids had no idea who I was even talking about, clearly a reflection of our ages. When I went on to discuss current celebs, they had many opinions. They expressed their disappointment about Miley, and admiration for Demi (Lovato that is), sadness about the break-up of Katy and Russel and hopefulness about Justin and Selena. They talked as if they knew these stars, as if they were more than big screen acquaintances.

Teens & The Media Who Influences Whom?
TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 14, 2012 AT 09:46PM
Such movies as Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 1 quickly became an international box office hit. This supernatural teen saga continues to interest and enthrall youth around the world. Today’s teens seem smitten with tales of the underworld, fantasy, and the supernatural. It is hard to know however if their fascination comes from an increase in these types of offerings available in the world around them, or has there been an increase in offerings (e.g. teen movies, book series, television, etc.) because teens seem so interested?

Our Teens-Ourselves-What they May Never Know
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 3, 2012 AT 11:15PM
A friend and I were having the funniest conversation. We were talking about some of the common household items from our childhoods that our kids will most likely never experience. Here’s what we came up with:

1. Rotary telephones. Remember the phones where you actually put your fingers into small holes that corresponded to numbers when you wanted to dial up a friend’s phone.

2. Typewriters. Yes, those writing machines that produced characters by pressing on a manually operated keyboard that activated a set of raised keys that hit the paper through an inked ribbon and then produced the desired character.

3. How about alarm clocks? We agreed that those too are becoming retro as they are being replaced by setting wake-up times on smart phones.

Can you think of more?
